Grand Bahama is the Bahamas’ northernmost island and is renowned for its beaches, reef-lined bays, mangrove swamps, all-inclusive resorts, and golf courses. It is just 55 miles off the coast of Florida and it is home to one of the main cities in the Bahamas, Freeport.

From unforgettable swims with dolphins to taking in the spectacular views of the ocean while enjoying some wonderful Bahamian food, the island has something to entice you and make you feel welcome. Grand Bahama should definitely be top of your list of vacation spots this year. Every day there is something new to try and if you are still not convinced to book your flights to the Bahamas, here are a few of the fun things you can do on a vacation to Grand Bahama.

Port Lucaya Marketplace

The Port Lucaya Marketplace, which has lots of specialized shops and boutiques, with restaurants to suit every taste. It is the largest open-air shopping, dining, and entertainment complex in the Bahamas and definitely worth a visit if you are booking your flights to the Bahamas. There are also eleven bars and lounges for late-night entertainment and you could try a cocktail at the Coconut & Fruit Daiquiri Stand or taste some of the amazing authentic Bahamian seafood platters at Daddy Brown’s Conch and Seafood Stand. There is also plenty of both local and foreign music at the Market Square so you can also dance all night long.

There are also plenty of shops to buy local crafts and souvenirs in the marketplace. Two straw markets, two craft centers, and lots push carts which are filled with plenty of Bahamian gifts to take home for family and friends, or just to keep as a reminder of your vacation.

Lucayan National Park

If you are booking your flights to the Bahamas and enjoy getting in touch with nature and seeing the local wildlife, then the Lucayan National Park is a great place to visit. Created in 1982 it is the most notable of the three parks on the island and it spans 40 acres. It has two caves that are open to the public and it is also home to the world’s largest underwater cave system that is protected by the park and much of the island’s history is also under the protection of the park, including remains of Lucayan Indians. It is important to note that swimming is not allowed in the caves and a special permit is needed for diving. The park was expanded in 2015 and has a large area of pine forest, creeks and coral reefs as well as the Gold Rock Beach, picture postcard perfect with beautiful white sands and clear blue water. The park exhibits lots of local vegetation and a variety of ecosystems are connected through boardwalks and nature trails. It is an incredible place to visit and if you are booking your flights to the Bahamas you will absolutely want to come and enjoy the incredible nature and wildlife the park has to offer.

Deadman’s Reef

If you’re booking your flights to the Bahamas, but you’re not sure what you want to do, you will want to think about visiting Paradise Cove beach. It is a great place to go if you’re looking for an eco-tour experience, an underwater adventure, or just want to unwind on the beach with a tasty Caribbean cocktail.

If you decide to visit the beach and you are hoping to do some snorkeling, you might want to head to the Southwest side of the island and visit Deadman’s Reef. Swimming out to the reef you will be able to see all the tropical marine life. Perhaps you could enjoy a snorkeling tour  or even take a trip with a glass bottom kayak.

If you are booking your flights to the Bahamas and you would prefer to relax on the beach then there are plenty of lounge chairs on the beach and or you can sit on the sizable deck for some shade that also  links to the bar and grill. Whatever you decide you can order a variety of meals and drinks including fresh caught fish and locally brewed Bahamian beer. Mixed drinks including regional specialties like gully wash and concoctions made with coconut are also available.

Garden of the Groves

On Grand Bahama, Garden of the Groves offers the best possible environmental experience that is definitely worth a visit if you are booking your flights to the Bahamas. With many winding trails you can explore the lush vegetation, gushing waterfalls, and sparkling fountains. You can also visit the chapel, which is used for weddings, prayer, and meditation.

There are various flowers and bushes that were recently planted at Garden of the Groves to supply nectar, insects, and berries for animals. The Garden is also visited by native and migratory birds, butterflies, and insects. Since it was reopened, the Garden has been recognized by the U.S. Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat. This makes it a great place to see some local wildlife and experience the beautiful nature that these islands are renowned for.

After you have taken a wander around there are also Garden Shops for you to explore, or you can enjoy lunch or dinner at the Garden Café and Bar. If you have children they can play at the newly expanded playground that they have. If you are booking flights to the Bahamas for a family vacation this is a great place for everyone to enjoy.
